Compared to What?

I was talking with a friend yesterday, a high-profile and immensely successful artist and entrepreneur, and he wisecracked, “if I keep at it, one of these days I might actually get good at this.”

Though he was being facetious, we both knew there was an element of truth to it. Scratch any successful person, and you’ll rarely find one who believes they’re as good as they really are.

In our ultra-connected social media world, the tendency is to compare ourselves to others. There’s always someone better off, better at something, more successful, more….something. Despite knowing better, our brains tend to compare our entire lives, warts and all, to a curated IG snapshot version of others.

The irony is that someone else is probably thinking the same thing about us.

We’re all on our own path, and our own timeline. Sometimes it’s helpful to look in the rear view and see how far we’ve come. The only person you’re competing against is yourself yesterday.
